Too Good

Too Good programs began over 25 years ago in the Hillsborough County School Districts of Florida.

Today, they are evidence based, and statistically proven to reduce violence, and substance abuse risk-factors in children and teens.

Too Good For Violence (7-10 one hour sessions, once per week)
Too Good for Drugs (10, one hour sessions, once per week)
Too Good for Drugs & Violence (10, one hour sessions, once per week)

Life Skills

According to the National Registry of Evidence-based programs and practices (NREPP), Life Skills is “a program that aims to prevent alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use and violence by targeting the major social and psychological factors that promote the initiation of substance use and other risky behaviors.”

In short, it teaches students the skills necessary to lead a happy, productive life.  Life Skills shows students how to have positive behaviors, relationships, and develop a personal sense of well being.

The Council has programming for students 3rd to 12th grade, in addition to a ‘Transitions’ program for young adults age 16-20. A program will take six to twelve weeks, depending on grade level.  Students complete worksheets, engage in discussion, and listen to short lectures for one hour, each week.

Life Skills Training

Each grade has it’s own age appropriate curriculum that cover one or more of the following skills:

  • Decision making
  • Coping with stress
  • Coping with anxiety
  • Self-Esteem
  • Self-Image
  • Violence
  • Social Skills
  • Communication
  • Risk-Taking
  • Family Communication
  • Healthy Relationships
  • Time & Money management
  • Setting Goals

The Alcohol and Drug Prevention Education Program (ADPEP)  is provided in each of our five counties (Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Wayne, and Yates) every other month of the year, beginning in January.

This program was originally adapted from ADPEP’s used in the Albany and Buffalo areas, by other NYS Council’s on addiction.  Since then, our dedicated staff continue to update and improve the program based on the needs of our communities.

The program itself is a total of six hours, beginning at either 3:30pm, or 4:00pm, and lasting until 5:30pm or 6:00pm, depending on the county.  It is spread out into three, two hour sessions, either held each Wednesday for three consecutive weeks, or Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday of the same week, again, depending on the county.

Program topics include:

  • Risk & Protective Factors
  • Alcohol abuse & binge drinking
  • Bodily harms, and health consequences of substance abuse
  • Specifics on substances of abuse
  • Definitions of Substance Abuse & Addiction
  • Different areas of addiction
  • Substance abuse & family issues

Requirements:

In addition to class time, program participants are required to complete homework assignments for each class.  These assignments are mandatory, and may affect eligibility to graduate the program if not completed.

Participants must also be present, and respectful for all three classes to graduate.  The Council reserves the right to dismiss any student suspected of being under the influence of substances during class.

A fee of $75 is due to the Council on the first day of class.  (Debit/credit cards, and personal checks are NOT accepted. We accept cash, and money orders) Unpaid fee’s may result in a withholding of completion certificates/letters to the participants’ referral source.

Referral sources generally include:

  • Local court systems (Youth Court included)
  • School disciplinary teams, administrators, and mental health staff
  • Parents & Family
  • Any agency or organization working with youth who are experimenting with substances, or showing early signs of substance abuse

Youth attending this program must be ages 14-20.  Youth under 13 and over 20 will not be accepted into this program, as we feel they would be better served by other resources.
